For over 12 years, Hassan Diab has fought false allegations of his involvement in a crime he did not commit. It is time to put an end to this miscarriage of justice.
The Ottawa university lecturer was accused by French authorities of involvement in the 1980 Rue Copernic bombing. He was arrested by the RCMP in November 2008 and placed under strict bail conditions until he was extradited to France in 2014. He spent more than three years in prison in France before the case against him collapsed. He was released in January 2018 after two French judges ruled the evidence against him wasn't strong enough to take to trial. He was never formally charged.
In a decision that shocks the conscience, the French judiciary has set an April 2023 date for another trial. France continues its baseless prosecution more than four years after Hassan was exonerated by French anti-terrorism magistrates.
The Canadian government must intervene to rescue Hassan Diab from groundless persecution. He and his family have suffered long enough!
