Multifaith Housing Initiative Gather Around the Table Cookbook Fundraiser

Multifaith Housing Initiative (MHI) is an Ottawa-based grassroots charitable organization that provides homes and a supportive community to those who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. The mission of MHI is "to provide and promote affordable homespace, to encourage harmonious relations amongst tenants of diverse backgrounds, and to mobilize the resources of faith communities and others for these purposes."

Currently MHI owns a total of 41 apartments and houses approximately 90 people including 30 children. We also provide volunteer support to our tenant households to help them settle in, feel welcomed and at home and to retain their housing.  We will be tripling the number of people we help by 2016 by building The Haven – 98 new units and townhouses, focused on families. We will start construction on this community in the Fall 2015 and are currently fundraising to make these homes a reality for those in need.

One of the ways MHI is doing this is through initiatives such as this cookbook compiled and edited by Ellie Topp, a Home Economist and Food Writer. When you buy a copy of this book, you are supporting the work of MHI!

The recipes in this cookbook have been contributed by people from all nations and all walks of life, along with favourites from several well-known Canadian food writers. The result is a group of unique, delicious recipes range from delectable versions of familiar comfort foods like Three-Cheese Spinach Lasagne to ethnic favourites such as Indonesian Vegetable Platter and Yassa Chicken, all adapted to use readily available ingredients.

On Sept. 24, we'll provide a tasting of some dishes from this cookbook, Gather Around the Table: Recipes for Meals to Share!

Copies of the book are now available at Octopus Books, both locations, and will also be available for purchase at this event.

Editor and best-selling cookbook author Ellie Topp will be present to sign books!
