Hello Friends, as the fabulous summer weather continues, we will continue to make use of our tiny but great space outside the store. Tomorrow ( Thursday August 26), we will be hosting ...
EVERYTHING you've always wanted to know about MARIJUANA
Information, questions and answers. We are excited to be hosting Russell Barth and Christine Lowe. They are local authors of Mommy's Funny Medicine the world's first childrens' book about Medical marijuana! They have recently been in the news because their video hit the one million mark on youtube last week. Check it out here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nV40H_g-NJo, and check them out at the store, Thursday at 3:00

And we can't resist telling you about three events we are really looking forward to - mark your calendars now. As we always try to do, these events are free and all are welcome!
September 21 at Raw Sugar, Octopus is launching the new book by Dave Bidini. Home and Away tells the story of the Canadian Homeless Soccer team on their 2008 journey to the Homeless World Cup of Soccer in Melbourne, Australia. Much more than a sporting journal, this is the story of people we so often look past and through, whose voices can't be heard above the din of consumer capitalism. It is also a fascinating snapshot of the lives of homeless people around the world. Taking place during the 2010 Homeless World Cup of Soccer happening in Brazil, this is going to be a great night.

October 1 we will be hosting Journalist Doug Saunders as he discusses his new book Arrival City. We will send more details as things are firmed up!
"From one of Canada's leading journalists comes a major book about how the movement of populations from rural to urban areas on the margins is reshaping our world. These transitional spaces are where the next great economic and cultural boom will be born, or where the great explosion of violence will occur. The difference depends on our ability to notice.
The twenty-first century is going to be remembered for the great, and final, shift of human populations out of rural, agricultural life into cities. The movement engages an unprecedented number of people, perhaps a third of the world's population, and will affect almost everyone in tangible ways. The last human movement of this size and scope, and the changes it will bring to family life, from large agrarian families to small urban ones, will put an end to the major theme of human history: continuous population growth.
Arrival City offers a detailed tour of the key places of the "final migration" and explores the possibilities and pitfalls inherent in the developing new world order. From villages in China, India, Bangladesh and Poland to the international cities of the world, Doug Saunders portrays a diverse group of people as they struggle to make the transition, and in telling the story of their journeys — and the history of their often multi-generational families enmeshed in the struggle of transition — gives an often surprising sense of what factors aid in the creation of a stable, productive community.

October 6 we are hosting Linda McQuaig as she launches her new book "The Trouble with Billionaires". As the details of when and where become known to us, we will share them with you. The glittering lives of billionaires may seem like a harmless source of entertainment. But such concentrated economic power reverberates throughout society, threatening the quality of life and the very functioning of democracy. It's no accident that the United States claims the most billionaires—but suffers among the highest rates of infant mortality and crime, the shortest life expectancy, as well as the lowest rates of social mobility and electoral political participation in the developed world.
Our society tends to regard large fortunes as evidence of great talent or accomplishment. Yet the vast new wealth isn't due to an increase in talent or effort at the top, but rather to changing social attitudes legitimizing greed and government policy changes that favour the new elite. Authoritative and eye-opening, The Trouble with Billionaires will spark debate about the kind of society we want.
