Hi everyone, As the summer is finally here, we have some hot topics and a cool party planned for you: 1) A panel discussion about our civil rights – We All Have A Right To The Truth – on Wednesday, August 26, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. at the Glebe Community Center. 2) Octopus Books Birthday Party on Thursday, October 8 at the bookstore – help us to make the Party even more memorable! 3) The highly acclaimed Adria Vasil talks about her new book Ecoholic Home on Monday, November 9. + + + + + + + + With the recent news about Abousfian Abdelrazik’s return to Canada after years of fear and uncertainty, we would like to invite you to a timely panel discussion about the civil rights of Canadian citizens and the violation of those rights by the Government. We All Have A Right To The Truth presents experiences and thoughts of three courageous individuals: Abdullah Almalki, Canadian Citizen who was detained, interrogated and tortured in Syria Yavar Hameed, human rights lawyer and counsel for Abousifian Abdelrazik Maureen Webb, human rights lawyer, co-chair of Civil Liberties Monitoring Group and author of the Illusions of Security: Global Surveillance and Democracy in the Post-9/11 World. The discussion is moderated by Bill Skidmore, who teaches human rights at Carleton University and is particularly interested in torture and other forms of political repression, as well as the impact of warfare on human rights. The event takes place in the Glebe Community Center (175 Third Ave), Scotton Hall (Main Hall) on Wednesday, August 26, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. The venue is wheelchair accessible. Admission is free. Please join us to discuss about civil rights in Canada – they are your rights too! + + + + + + + + As we’ve been repeating for eight months now, Octopus Books celebrates its 40th anniversary this year. In addition to our events we also want to throw an Octopus Books Birthday Party on a very suitable date, October 8. To prepare for the party we would need your help: please share with us your stories, memories and pictures related to Octopus Books. It can be anything from a one sentence comment on our interior design to a ten page essay about the importance of the bookstore in your life. Pictures (or a copy of a picture) from any year or any occasion are greatly appreciated too. Please send your material to events@octopusbooks.ca or pop by at the store at 116 Third Ave. The sooner the better! Stay tuned for more party details! + + + + + + + + Heads up for the book launch of Ecoholic Home by Adria Vasil on Monday, November 9. Come and learn how to make your home greener and your life more sustainable. More details later. + + + + + + + + Enjoy the sunny days, octo-team
